The winemaker and his story

Welcome to Villa Maria Estate, New Zealand’s most-awarded family-owned winery.

It all began in 1961, when George Fistonich leased a vineyard of less than a hectare in Mangere, south of Auckland, and made his first wine.

Since then, Villa Maria has grown into one of the country’s best-known wineries. Named “Winery of the Year” in New Zealand several times and praised by the international press, Villa Maria has vineyards in the country’s finest wine regions.

The estate is also strongly committed to environmentally responsible practices and organic viticulture.

A word from the winemaker

“The name Villa Maria came about, quite fittingly, after a few drinks with friends. Villa is a fitting name for a house internationally, and Maria is a very common name among Croatian women. Together, the two had both a family connection and global appeal.”
